Abstract

I tell you, give but more and ever more, You'll find, that way, you never go astray, Try simply to confuse your auditory, To satisfy them's hopeless, anyway. 1 All direct quotations [except Luhmann’s] have been translated into English by the author, except for those in Luhmanns (2000).1 Johann Wolfgang Goethe: Faust. A Tragedy. (Prelude on the Stage. Director) Whatever the term means: Unterhaltung is a lubricant for all kinds of communication and operates like a communicative catalyst. Programmes of Unterhaltung also catalyse uncounted conversations about those programmes and also about Unterhaltung itself, which is why we can attribute a highly integrative social function to Unterhaltung. But Unterhaltung is as ambiguous in colloquial German as it is an inexact scientific term. Even communication science is short of precise definitions, because research has failed to construct a generally acknowledged theory of Unterhaltung. Moreover, the conventional distinction of information, persuasion and Unterhaltung is not valid any longer. So a rehabilitation of Unterhaltung as a category is not at all satisfying, and it can serve as a metaphor in an elaborated theory of communication at best. Therefore I recommend to discharge the term from the scientific discourse and to replace it by more precise categories of observation. In other words, we always should say exactly whether we are talking about amusement, conversation, animation or entertainment.
